Abstract
This predictive correlation study was conducted to understand the impact of demographical, physical and psycho-social factors on the perceived health status among the elderly in local communities. The subjects were 396 elderly who were older than 65-year old living in 13 urban and rural areas in Korea. Physical health status is measured by the number of diseases and the activities of daily living. Psycho-social health status is measured by depression and loneliness. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to see the independent impact of demographic, physical, and psycho-social health status. The result shows demographic factors are not able to keep the significant meaning when physical health status factors were added. Among physical health factors, the number of disease is not significant, but the activities of daily living is significantly related to perceived health. The final model with psycho-social factors explains 45% of variation of perceived health. Among demographic, physical, and psycho-social factors, psycho-social factors, especially depression, was found to be the the most significant relationship with perceived health. The result of this study suggests developing community programs to improve social relationship and to reduce depression and loneliness among the elderly is the key to improve and maintain elderly`s health. More attention is needed to run group activity programs for elderly`s health in local communities.
